Last Sunday I went for an other excellent trip with EOS, the Greek mountainclub chapter Hania. We went with three buses in the morning, and the new archaeological museum in Eleftherna was our first stop. This is a brand new museum with finds from the area.
The museum is located outside Rethimno and you follow the signs from Scaletta at the coast. Easy to reach from Iraklio, Rethimno and Hania!!!
The ancient Elefterna was inhabited since Minoan time till Roman era, and was build on top of the last town. It is amazing what they have found there, and it is so nicely displayed in the museum. I highly recommend it. You can look at some of the finds in this link:http://en.mae.com.gr/gallery.html
After our stop at the museum, with went with our buses 2 km longer down the road to the village Ancient Eleferna. Here the path to the ancient town and the excavations start. It is an easy path to walk for everyone, and a really wonderful sight with many interesting things to explore.
We were about 160 persons of all ages on our walk on this gorgeous December Sunday, and will explored the Tower, the water reservoars from Roman times, the Acropolis and the Roman town.
After that we walked on the E4 path all the way to Margarites, a beautiful stone village. It is only a few minutes drive from Ancient Eleftherna, but it takes a few hours to walk there.
We enjoyed the walk at the village with it’s narrow streets and renovated houses, churches ans taverns.
On this December Sunday a few taverns were open, and we enjoyed the last ray of sun with local food and wine. In the end, some of us visited the local Monastery with it’s view, flowers and church.
The day was perfect, the trip wonderful, the sites interresting and the nature at it’s best. Try the museum, the villages and archaeological sites any time you visit the island!!
