Our day starts with a stop in Vrises village close to the river side and under Plateau trees for a mountain tea “malotira” with honey and some local snacks. After our morning stop we are driving around traditional villages of Apokoronas through amazing routes with dense vegetation and nice views until we reach the village of Fres. Outside of Fres, through a ravine at the really beautiful position Koukou we meet the temple Virgin Mary (Panagia) of Two Rocks. Once a rock detached from the mountain and rolled down the slope. On the top of the rock, the church of Panagia was built. Adjacent there is another rock, both forming an impressive scenery. The church was built in the late 13th century and is one of the most important Byzantine monuments in Apokoronas region.
Our amazing off-road adventure starts after climbing up the White Mountains and passing through some villages which are situated in the foothills of White Mountains. On the way up to the shepherd’s hut “Mitato” you will enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of northern Crete and, if we are lucky eagles and wild goats will stop for us to take some photos. A bumpy rocky road will lead us up to our trip’s highest point 1300 meters in altitude, where you will find out all about the lifestyle of a shepherd and explore his original hut – “Mitato”.
On our way down to the villages we will stop at Fres village, where we will be welcomed by the owner of a traditional tavern to introduce us to Cretan cuisine with plenty of food, wine and warm Cretan hospitality. Easy and relaxing way back will follow after lunch.
We keep our group sizes low so you have the freedom to move around and get involved with your surroundings, as well as more personal attention from our local guides. This intimate size ensures that your group will not crowd your experience. You can expect up to 30 travelers on a trip but the average is 15-20. Check individual trip pages for maximum group sizes.
